Heyo! Small startup in all 3 major clouds about to do our annual pentest for SOC2 obligations. We do SOC2 audits of our prod environment in AWS, GCP, and Azure, and I'm working through the logistics of running our pentest in staging instead of prod. Last year they said they validated findings in prod and tested in staging, but they never did any validation (going with a new firm this year). I'm going to have them test our app stack in GCP staging, test the network/cloud infra in AWS and Azure staging, and will include this with the report:
GCP staging serves as the production-representative test environment for the applications and controls explicitly identified in the pentest scope. Representativeness is supported by configuration comparisons and live-state verification, with differences and exclusions documented. Production-specific and cloud-specific risks not covered by staging testing are assessed through supplemental testing in the relevant GCP, AWS, and Azure environments.
We'll provide supplemental documentation (gitops and IaC commit IDs) to demonstrate that GCP staging mirrors the same app versions as prod, and a statement from my CPO attesting that the staging environments are accurate representations of prod. Does this sound like enough evidence for a SOC2 Type II audit?
